Ys IV - Mask Of The Sun. If you haven't played a game in the Ys series, it's about time you tried one. If the game has a weak story, then it will likely fail to engage the player, and in turn they may become disinterested. Moreover, while many of the tilesets look great, some look muddy and dull. Ys IV contains a couple of anime- like sequences, both at the beginning and the end. I agree wholeheartedly with that sentiment in general. I have a feeling that when Ys IV was ported to the SNES from a more capable platform audio- wise, some of the quality was lost in its reproduction, and as a result, some of the instrumentation sounds rigid and unfitting. The slashing sounds that Adol's sword makes in combat is really loud and harsh and to be honest, it's a little annoying. As far as replay goes. I had a lot more fun playing Ys IV than any Final Fantasy game. While Final Fantasy games tend to keep me chugging along for various reasons, its fun factor is not one of them. While Final Fantasy games (with the exception of FFV, which is one of my favourite games of all time) almost uniformly feel like a chore to me while playing, Ys IV was a breath of fresh air in that respect. Its gameplay is fun and fast- paced, its story evocative, and above all, the game is downright addictive. Ys IV is a great choice for RPG masters and beginners alike. For dungeon- crawlers and those craving an interesting story, it will be sure to please. Graphics: 1. 4/2. Sound: 1. 9/2. 0Story: 1. Playability/Replay: 1. After the dreadful, dreadful Ys III, it would appear that Falcom has gone back to the tried- and- true style of the first two Ys games: overhead view game play with Adol running at demons kamikaze- like. Aside from Ys III, Nihon has never really deviated from the same basic formula. In addition to this one, there was also Ys IV: Mask of the Sun for SNES, which was released just about a month before this game came out. Strangely, Nihon, perhaps in a step to protect the innocent, pulled some kind of Bizarro- Dragnet stunt. They kept the names and the places fairly identical in the two games, but they changed the plots. Both games are Ys IV, however, they have absolutely nothing to do with each other. Most of the people who engage in such arguments most likely do not speak Japanese. Watching such things unfold on forums and IRC is kind of like watching a bunch of Canadians discussing American politics: nobody really knows what’s going on, so everyone involved looks like a retard. But so is Mask of the Sun. I just wish there more English in it at the moment.
